Mitigating Wildfire Risks Using Gen AI

Overview

Earth AI was an hackathon that toke place in London in collaboration with Open AI designed to ignite creativity in using generative AI to address the climate crisis. After forming teams, we had to identify a need and rapidly generate an idea, pitching it after 24 hours of development.

Challenge

Wildfires globally lead to extensive destruction. In Australia alone, these claimed the lives of 3 billion animals in 2019-20. Remarkably, 72% of forest walkers are willing to gather dead vegetation to help mitigate the risks associated with forest fires.

Solution

An app that combines satellite and weather data to identify high-risk days and locations for forests in Southern Europe. As a result, Generate AI guides the community of app users to high-risk zones, employing gamification techniques to track and reward preventive actions.

Additionally, general information about the current location (a natural park in this case) is provided, along with a few missions designed to reduce wildfire risk. Each mission, tailored to the current risk level, offers carbon credits as a reward for users' preventive actions. The revenue model relies on partnerships with local shops, where these credits can be exchanged for discounts.

Missions

Gamification is a crucial aspect of the app, designed to attract users to play, contribute directly, and share their achievements within the community. Upon mission completion, users are required to upload a picture as evidence of their achievement, facilitating the unlocking of carbon credits. These proofs of achievements are automatically analyzed and checked by generative AI.

Map

To foster community building, the map page showcases all available missions in specific areas, including those already completed by other users.
